I grew up on top of the Mayacammas mountain range. I did not always want to stay close to home and instead I chose to live, study, and work in many wonderful places including: France, San Francisco, Ashland, OR, NYC, Berkeley, Oakland and most recently Maui. I love travel and adventures. I like to picture myself living each place I visit, and yet somehow Napa Valley has always remained home. Of course, it was not until adulthood that I truly marveled at the beauty of Napa Valley.
I have not lived or worked in the Napa Valley for over 11 years, yet when I moved back to the Valley in July, I received the most amazing welcome from friends, colleagues and former Pilates and GYROTONIC ® clients. My email inbox was full of messages inviting me to lunch, coffee and of course a glass of wine. I got Facebook messages from high school friends referring me to: physicians, dentists, hair stylists and more. I got cryptic texts, “U back?” I was delighted by employment offers before my 40’ container made it to the dock.
Thank you all for a marvelous welcome home.
In Pilates, we use the word “home” to describe a few different positions and movements. “Home” is when the Pilates reformer is closest to the foot bar, where there is no or little tension on the springs. “Home” on the reformer is a starting place, a resting place and a place where one can regroup and transition to a new movement or exercise.
“Home” in the body is the neutral spine or in Classical Pilates is often called the “powerhouse”. The neutral spine is the place between spinal flexion and spinal extension. “Home” is place in the body where one aims to find strength, balance and stability; it is often called the core. This is how I chose to name my business, ON CORE Studio. GYROTONIC ® also references the core, in GYROTONIC ® we call it the “seed center”.
In my teaching, I aim to use many modalities: Pilates, CoreAlign, GYROTONIC ®, yoga, and more to help clients to feel at “home” in the core. As clients, perform movement exercises my goal is to impart deeper understanding of alignment, biomechanics, anatomy, dynamic movement this results in greater overall mental and physical fitness. I am most interested in creating an opportunity for clients to form new understandings and new neural pathways; I do not want clients to mimic exercise choreography. I want lasting change for my clients.
With practice of Pilates, CoreAlign, GYROTONIC ® and yoga quality of life can be improved. Perhaps greater range of motion or freedom from pain is achieved. Perhaps a client’s tennis or golf game improves, surfing is easier, racecar driving becomes a possibility or standing to cook a meal is fun and not uncomfortable. Perhaps sitting at work becomes easier and maybe the physical demands of caring for a small child are lessened. My aim is to help make life more fun and enjoyable for clients and to help clients feel comfortably at home inhabiting this amazing gift of a body!
Napa Valley it feels good to be back. I am looking forward to serving you!
